Recruitment & Community Engagement Coordinator (Chicago)

The Role

The Recruitment & Community Engagement Coordinator is Code Platoon’s primary community presence in Chicago — the face of the organization to Veteran audiences, community organizations, and military families across the region. This is a people-first, community-first role for an energetic relationship-builder who is as comfortable presenting to a room of transitioning service members as they are following up one-on-one with a military spouse exploring a career change.

Key Responsibilities

Veteran Organization Engagement & Discovery

  • Map and actively engage Veteran service organizations (VSOs), VFW posts, American Legion chapters, veteran-focused nonprofits, community colleges, military transition programs, and online Veteran networks across Chicagoland and the broader Midwest.
  • Build and maintain lasting relationships with key contacts to position Code Platoon as a trusted, go-to resource for tech career pathways.
  • Identify and attend recruiting events, career fairs, hiring expos, and community gatherings where transitioning service members, Veterans, and their families are present.
  • Maintain detailed records of contacts, partnership activity, and outreach outcomes in HubSpot.

Recruitment Management Support

  • Plan and facilitate virtual information sessions — info nights, Q&A webinars, and open houses — introducing Code Platoon’s programs and career outcomes to prospective students.
  • Serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for Code Platoon, presenting compellingly to Veteran audiences, organizational partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Follow up with interested leads to move them through the application pipeline with personalized guidance.
  • Coordinate with the Recruitment Manager to track prospect status, manage HubSpot workflows, and contribute to monthly and quarterly recruitment reporting.

VA Benefits & Career Pathway Advising

Veterans and military family members often don’t know what funding is available to them. Closing that gap is a core part of this role.

  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of VA education benefits — GI Bill (Ch. 33/30), VR&E (Ch. 31), and MyCAA — to confidently advise prospects on funding options.
  • Clearly communicate how Code Platoon cohorts align with post-military career paths in software development, DevOps, and cybersecurity.
  • Connect prospects with appropriate VA, DoD, and nonprofit resources, and collaborate with the team to keep benefits guidance current and accurate.

Military Spouse & Adult Dependent Outreach

Military spouses and adult dependents are an eligible and underserved segment of Code Platoon’s student population. This role includes dedicated outreach to these communities, not just general recruitment activity.

  • Identify and engage organizations and events serving military spouses and dependents — MOAA, SECO, Blue Star Families, and installation family support programs.
  • Develop messaging that speaks authentically to the challenges and opportunities facing military families pursuing tech career transitions.
  • Represent Code Platoon at spouse-focused hiring fairs, virtual panels, and community events.
  • Track spouse and dependent engagement separately in HubSpot to support reporting and campaign follow-up.

Pre-Requisite Course Guidance

This coordinator plays a key role in keeping accepted students on track through CP Prep so that cohort seats convert to cohort starts.

  • Guide accepted prospects through CP Prep, helping them understand expectations and stay on track for cohort readiness; flag at-risk candidates to the Recruitment Manager early.
  • Track CP Prep completion in HubSpot and proactively identify candidates who need additional support to maximize cohort conversion rates.

Collaboration & Reporting

  • Gather photos, testimonials, and event recaps to support the Marketing team’s content needs.
  • Identify local advertising and community visibility opportunities that amplify Code Platoon’s Chicago presence.
  • Contribute to monthly Marketing Scorecards, quarterly grant reports, and weekly team meetings.

Qualifications

Required

  • 1–3 years of experience in community outreach, event coordination, recruitment, or relationship management.
  • Strong personal connection to the Veteran or military family community (Veteran, spouse, or dependent strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships; this is a relationship-first role.
  • Comfortable and confident representing Code Platoon publicly; this role requires a natural public presence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and prospect relationships simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with HubSpot or a comparable CRM platform.
  • Based in the Chicago area with reliable transportation for local travel (30–40% of time); ability to transport event materials up to 25 lbs.

Preferred

  • Working knowledge of VA education benefits (GI Bill, VR&E, MyCAA) and military transition programs.
  • Experience with military spouse or dependent communities; familiarity with MOAA, Blue Star Families, or installation family programs.
  • Background in education, workforce development, or nonprofit recruitment.
  • Interest in technology and ability to speak credibly about career opportunities in software development.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $42,000 – $47,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible remote schedule; occasional evening or weekend events.
